Superintendent's Message

I hope everyone enjoyed their snow days as much as our students did this week!

Back in Action!

After a quiet week of empty hallways, classrooms, parking lots, and a couple of snow days, it was great to welcome our students and staff back to school! I hope everyone enjoyed some family time during the mid-winter recess.

As we flip another page in the calendar, the number of school events starts to pick up significantly. But before we officially move on to March, let’s take a look back at some of the amazing things our students and staff were a part of in February.

Thank You - Custodial and Grounds Teams!
I want to express my sincere appreciation for the work of our custodial and grounds teams, who, once again, battled snow through the night to ensure that our students and staff could arrive safely this week.  Words cannot express how comforting it is to know that they are there for all of us throughout the year!

P.S. I Love You Day - Be The Light

Prior to the mid-winter recess, all four schools celebrated P.S. I Love You Day, embracing this year’s theme of “be the light!” From compliment walls and positive affirmations to supportive phrases on coffee cups and glow stick gratitude, each building put their own spin on activities that engaged students while promoting kindness and connection. The week concluded with a district-wide show of support for the cause with everyone wearing purple! Click the picture below to see the OMS Tornado News Team in action, asking students and staff, "Who is your light on a tough day?"

NYS Qualifier - Girls’ Wrestling

Congratulations to Kaitlyn Costa, who placed second in the county championship for girls wrestling and went on to represent Section XI in Albany at the NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling State Championships. We are so proud of all your accomplishments, Kaitlyn!

Heading to Counties! - HF Girls Basketball
Congratulations to the Harborfields Girls Basketball program on an impressive win over Northport on Friday to earn a spot at the County Finals next week.  Click the picture below to see the celebration. Way to go, Tornadoes!

OMS Robotics

For the first time ever, Oldfield Middle School entered FOUR teams into the First Lego League Qualifiers, and what an experience it was!

  • HF Tornadoes, the rookie team, earned the Core Values Award for outstanding teamwork and camaraderie.

  • The Collaborative Crew took home the Innovation Award for their creative problem-solving.

  • OMS Tornadoes battled tough competition and climbed to sixth on the leaderboard.

  • Harborfields Tornadoes wowed judges with an impressive archaeological dig model, complete with a working remote-controlled rover and a homemade metal detector! They were the runner-up for the Innovation Award.

All teams showed creativity, collaboration, and commitment, and because of it, two of the four are headed to the Long Island Championship on March 9! Congratulations to all the participants and advisors, and best of luck to the HF Tornadoes and Harborfields Tornadoes in the next round of competition!

100th Day of School

On February 13, students commemorated a particularly exciting milestone - the 100th day of school! Students celebrated in the Makerspace by designing creations with 100 items, and participating in engaging classroom activities focused on the number 100. Students, and even some staff, dressed the part, coming fully decked out as 100-year-olds! We are so proud of all that our students have accomplished and look forward to the rest of the school year!

Please Join Us - ENL Multicultural Night

Please join us for our Districtwide English as a New Language (ENL) Celebration on March 11, 2026, at 7:00 PM in the Harborfields High School Auditorium! This inspiring evening will honor the hard work, growth, and accomplishments of our ENL students while celebrating the rich cultures, languages, and experiences that strengthen our Harborfields community.

February Superintendent’s Spotlight

The Superintendent's Spotlight at the February Board of Education meeting highlighted the incredible project-based learning happening throughout Washington Drive, both at the grade and building levels. Take a moment to watch the brief video below to learn all about PBL at WDPS!

Here are some of my favorite moments from this past week:

Harborfields High School

AP Literature students and members of Tri-M traveled into NYC to experience The Great Gatsby live on stage — bringing the pages they’ve studied to life powerfully and memorably.  Students enjoyed the opportunity to see how the arts connect across disciplines and deepen understanding beyond the classroom.

Mrs. Benchimol led a Talking Circle with her classes focusing on Social-Emotional Learning. The talking points included: What does it mean to have self-management? How do you stay motivated when work feels hard? How can you handle a disagreement without arguing?

The student responses were thoughtful and highlighted their deep understanding of social-emotional well-being!

Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School

The mural club is hard at work bringing the Lion’s “Mane” Mission to life! The beautiful mural will soon welcome students at the entrance to the cafeteria…a daily reminder of who we are and what we stand for. We can’t wait for our school community to enjoy it!

Announcements & Shoutouts!
Congratulations - NYS Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute!

We’re thrilled to announce that Yoselin Benitez Almendares and Vincenza Czekaj have been selected to represent Long Island at the New York Statewide Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute this April! There. They’ll join peers from across the state for a Mock Assembly at the NYS Capitol, debating and voting on legislation they’ve studied throughout the program. Even more exciting, Harborfields’ own Yoselin Benitez Almendares has been selected for the prestigious role of moderator. Please join us in congratulating these outstanding student leaders.
