Superintendent's Message

I had the pleasure of attending the New York State School Board's Annual Conference with our Board of Education this week. I am grateful to our Board for their commitment to our students and our schools.

Fall is in Full Swing!

By the end of this coming week, we’ll be turning yet another page in the calendar and welcoming November. A new month brings with it new opportunities and possibilities, and there’s so much to look forward to here in Harborfields. This upcoming week is filled with festive events that you won’t want to miss: The sixth-grade Trunk or Treat event, Safe Halloween at the high school, and, of course, the Halloween parades at Washington Drive.

Many of our varsity teams are heading to the playoffs, so come out to support your Tornadoes!

Newsday Marching Band Festival

The high school Marching Band & Kickline wowed the crowd with their seamless field show at the Newsday Marching Band Festival! They looked and sounded spectacular — and had the largest (and loudest) cheering section! Kudos to Ms. Scilla, Mr. Bilawsky, and Coach Best for their dedication and support, and congratulations to all on an incredible performance season!

A PEAK Musical Adventure!
Five TJL students, Augustus Briggs, Kathryn Keenan, Micaela Maio, Juliet Schimpf, and Lucas Son, represented Harborfields at the SCMEA PEAK festival. This one-of-a-kind musical experience brought children, parents, and teachers together to explore the joy of making music! The students had the opportunity to learn about folk dancing, bucket drumming, found sounds, foley arts, chorus, music games, and ended the day with a performance for their families. Special thanks to Ms. Drzewiecki for accompanying the students and sharing in this inspiring day of music and creativity.

Here are some of my favorite moments from this past week:

Harborfields High School

One of the new clubs at the high school this year, Esports, aims to transform students’ passion for competitive gaming into a platform for developing essential skills such as critical thinking, decision-making, and collaboration. At its first meeting of the year, twenty students showed up ready to play! Esports Club Advisor Ms. DeVaney gauged student interest in the types of games they’d like to participate in and got them started on the Esports gaming platform, PlayVS. I can’t wait to see how this club flourishes throughout the school year!

Oldfield Middle School

The Helping Hands Club ran a Back to School food drive, which focused on collecting breakfast items and after-school snacks for the HACO food pantry. Last week, members of the club visited the food pantry with their donated items and helped restock the shelves!

Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School

The annual TJL PTA “Read In” was a huge success! Seeing the outpouring of community support for HACO while sharing stories and enjoying time with students was truly heartwarming.

Washington Drive Primary School

What’s October without pumpkins? The PTA brought the spirit of the season to life by turning the outdoor classroom into a pumpkin patch for all students to enjoy. Each student picked their own pumpkin and experienced a bit of fall fun right at school.
